So Brayden has always been small. When it comes to the growth chart she has always been in the 1-5% for her weight. Our doctor in NJ wasn't too worried, but it seems as if we have picked a worrier for our new Texas doctor. When Brayden went in for her year well visit she weighed in at 16 lbs 3 oz. He had us get her blood drawn because he was concerned about her growth and wanted some tests run (we heard back from them a few days later and they said everything was normal).
So fast forward to Tuesday for her 15 month well visit...she weighed in at 18 lbs 6 oz. (I thought this was great! 2 pounds in 3 months is great for her!!) He then informed us that when we had her blood tested in August there was 1 test that came back on the low end of normal...the bicarb count. So he wanted her retested to see if that number is up, lower, or the same. He is concerned that she could be having kidney problems because of the weight gain issue and the low bicarb number. We went through another blood draw (they had to use both arms because they couldn't get it in the first) which Brayden and Kenny and I hated. Poor baby.
Anyway, fast forward to today when we get a message on the machine saying that they scheduled an appointment with a Pediatic Critical Care Specialist for next week!! What??!!?? You don't call and tell me the results, don't consult with us as her parents to see if this is what we want to do, and you go ahead and make an appointment...and to top it off, we are going to be out of town next week!!
So I call to talk to the nurse and find out that normal bicarb levels are between 20 and 32. Brayden's is at 15. So maybe there is a problem and if there is they say medicine can fix it easily. I don't know....for now I just worry that there is something wrong...and we won't know for a few weeks.

Sweet baby girl!

Oh no!! Owen has always been small too!! He was in the 5th percentile for weight until his last appt. Now he is in the 3rd percentile. He weighs 16 lbs 3 oz too. We are having to try to get him to eat more...which is an interesting undertaking.
We will pray for Brayden. I'm sorry that the doc's office just left that message. That is not ok. I would have been so mad!

I'm sorry you are worried about Brayden. Sometimes, doctors just DO NOT handle things the right way. They are only thinking of fixing things and not thinking of how they should approach you.
Keep us posted and I will be praying.
I am so sorry! We will be praying for sweet Brayden and the doctors.
Oh my goodness! Some nurses have no common sense to leave a message like that on your machine. Seriously! I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. We will be praying for little Brayden. She will be just fine. =)
When Haven was born and she was under 6 lbs we had to have her blood drawn and the nurse told us when we went in. "Well, we don't generally draw blood on babies this small unless its something REALLY serious!" I had been a mom for 3 weeks and FREAKED out. Turned out nothing was wrong. Again....no common sense sometimes.
Oh that bites, I hope everything works out.
You know your daughter better than anyone. I'm pretty sure that if it was something really serious there would be other symptoms. At this point, try not to search online or let your mind run wild for what it might be (as hard as that is!). Is there someone you trust that you could get a second opinion from? They also would not wait until next week if it was something to be frantic about. Kelsea (my niece) has to go on a "special diet" when she wasn't gaining wait. They made her eat butter and cream and pure fat on everything! This might just end up being a good excuse for you to go buy a bunch of fattening groceries:) I'll be praying for Brayden as well. I love that picture- she is so sweet!
Okay, let me guess... It's Dr. Kim and the kidney problem is RTA? If that is right, message me on Facebook. I have LOTS of experience with this!!!
Oh sweet friend, it is so hard to be a mommy and not worry. Brayden is so precious. I am emailing my friend in TX right now who was in the same boat with her little girl a year ago who is now 2 yrs and 3 months and is so chubby and healthy. :) I'll email you...
Sorry they handled this so poorly!
We'll be praying for her (and you).
Seriously, medical school should teach a class on how to nicely, compassionately handle parents who's whole world is wrapped up in that tiny patient! I heard about the nasty blood draws--so sad that Brayden had to go through it. At least now you'll go meet with some doctors who really KNOW what they are talking about (and hopefully can talk like a real human being!).
We'll be praying for you guys!
You are a great mom! We will be praying for you guys as you wait. I think the unknown is the hardest part when something MIGHT not be perfect in your child. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, bring your day planner and take lots of notes and request copies of all the reports.
Crazy doctors. We will be praying for Brayden and you as well. It's good to know that at least medicine will fix the problem and nothing more invasive. She is such a little cutie.
Bless your heart! We'll be thinking about you.
Doctors suck sometimes. Try not to worry unless you have to. Lots of love.
Aaaaah! We just had labs done on Elliott last week for the same reason. I had to call them for the results (they hadn't called me after 5 days) and the person I talked to said everything looks normal but she didn't actually know what the original doc was looking for. So frustrating. Am praying for both our small girls.
BTW, you should tell the ped's office that it is a total breach of HIPPA regulations for them to schedule an appt for your child with an outside office (and give them your personal information) without your permission.
I will be praying for Brayden that everything turns out just fine! Hugs from Abilene.
Dealing with doctors' offices can be so frustrating. I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. I'll be praying that the visit with the specialist brings good news.
